Routes and Places

Before we go any further, a bit about reasons to motorhome in Spain. The wide variety of routes, from scenic coastal drives to mountainous terrains, and the endless list of great places make Spain something very special for motorhomers.

The Northern Coast

Often referred to as Green Spain, due to its lush landscape, the northern coast presents some of the most breathtaking views in the country. This route starts in Basque Country and winds through Asturias and Galicia.

  • Bilbao: Home to the famous Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao is a great place to start. The Basque region is known for its culture and stunning coastlines.
  • Santander: Drive along the rugged coastline, exploring picturesque fishing villages like Laredo and Comillas. Santander itself offers a blend of beaches, parks and terrific modern architecture.
  • Gijón and Oviedo: These charming Asturian cities offer history, beaches and lush green countryside. Perfect for exploring at your own pace.
  • Santiago de Compostela: A UNESCO World Heritage city and an important stop on the Camino de Santiago (a network of pilgrims’ ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral in Galicia), this city is extremely rich in culture and history.

If you’re looking for sun, sand and sea, the Mediterranean coast is ideal. From the beautiful beaches of Costa Brava to the more tranquil Costa Blanca, this is a region which offers an unforgettable trip.

  • Barcelona: The bustling metropolis is a must-see for any motorhome traveller. Iconic landmarks like the seemingly ever-unfinished Sagrada Familia cathedral, Park Güell and Las Ramblas make this a must-see city.
  • Costa Brava: Drive down the coast and stop at the famous Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar beaches. The coastal paths are excellent for hiking and cycling.
  • Valencia: Explore the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. Valencia also offers many beaches, campgrounds and motorhome-friendly facilities.
  • Alicante: End your Mediterranean tour in Alicante, where you can explore the castle, enjoy the beaches, and enjoy fresh seafood at local restaurants.

Andalusia

The south of Spain is a dream for history enthusiasts and sun seeking motorhomers. With its warm climate, rich Moorish history and stunning architecture, Andalusia will give you an unforgettable motorhoming experience.

  • Granada: Home to the breathtaking Alhambra Palace, Granada offers a magical combination of history and stunning landscapes.
  • Ronda: A town perched on a cliff, Ronda offers dramatic views of the surrounding valley, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers.

The Pyrenees / Central Spain

If you prefer the mountains to the sea, Spain’s central and northern regions offer dramatic landscapes, perfect for exploring in a motorhome.

  • The Pyrenees: If you’re looking for adventure, head to the Pyrenees. The region is perfect for hiking, skiing in the winter, and breathtaking views year-round. This world-famous mountain range stretches right up into the south of France.

Best Ways to Get to Spain

Getting to Spain by motorhome can be an adventure, and a rewarding experience in itself. There are several options depending on where you’re coming from.

Ferry: If you’re traveling from the UK or other European countries, taking a ferry to Spain is one of the best options. Ferry rides can take 24 hours or more, so make sure you book a cabin for a comfortable journey.

Popular ferry routes from the UK to Spain include:

  • Portsmouth to Bilbao (operated by Brittany Ferries)
  • Plymouth to Santander (operated by Brittany Ferries)
  • Barcelona to Genoa or Civitavecchia (operated by Grimaldi Lines)

Driving: For those already in Europe, driving to Spain offers a scenic and adventurous option. From the south of France it’s just a short drive to northern Spain, making it an ideal route for motorhome travel.

Travelling on a Budget

Spain can be a budget-friendly destination for motorhome travellers, though to make the financial most of it you must plan carefully.

  • Avoid Expensive Campsites: Instead of staying in campsites that feel relatively high cost, look for motorhome areas that are free or offer low-cost services like waste disposal and water.
  • Local shopping: Stock up on your groceries at local markets and supermarkets, where you can find fresh produce – and affordable Spanish wines!
  • Fuel: Prices in Spain can vary, so always check for the best at local fuel stations, and consider filling up in smaller towns to avoid higher prices in touristy areas.

Taking Your Dog to Spain

Spain is pet-friendly, but there are certain rules you need to follow.

  • Pet Passport etc: If you’re travelling with a pet from the UK, you’ll need to ensure they have a pet passport that includes up-to-date vaccinations (especially rabies). You’ll also need to make sure that your pet is microchipped for identification.
  • Campsites: Spain has numerous campsites that are pet-friendly, but always check in advance to make sure your motorhome site allows animals. Many motorhome areas also permit pets, but always ensure you stick to leash laws – and clean up!
