Often referred to as Green Spain, due to its lush landscape, the northern coast presents some of the most breathtaking views in the country. This route starts in Basque Country and winds through Asturias and Galicia.
- Bilbao: Home to the famous Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao is a great place to start. The Basque region is known for its culture and stunning coastlines.
- Santander: Drive along the rugged coastline, exploring picturesque fishing villages like Laredo and Comillas. Santander itself offers a blend of beaches, parks and terrific modern architecture.
- Gijón and Oviedo: These charming Asturian cities offer history, beaches and lush green countryside. Perfect for exploring at your own pace.
- Santiago de Compostela: A UNESCO World Heritage city and an important stop on the Camino de Santiago (a network of pilgrims’ ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle James in the cathedral in Galicia), this city is extremely rich in culture and history.

- Costa Brava: Drive down the coast and stop at the famous Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar beaches. The coastal paths are excellent for hiking and cycling.

The Pyrenees / Central Spain

- The Pyrenees: If you’re looking for adventure, head to the Pyrenees. The region is perfect for hiking, skiing in the winter, and breathtaking views year-round. This world-famous mountain range stretches right up into the south of France.
- Madrid: Spain’s capital is brimming with culture, from the world-renowned Prado Museum to the royal palace. Explore the city’s parks, such as Retiro Park, or venture out to charming nearby towns such as Toledo or Segovia.
Legal Requirements
Before embarking on your motorhome adventure in Spain, there are some key legal considerations to think about so you can make sure of a safe (and legal!) trip.
Driving Licence: A standard driving licence is valid for travel in Spain. You will also need a valid V5 document and breakdown cover. You should also familiarise yourself with the laws around driving in Spain before you set off.
Insurance: It’s essential to have the right motorhome insurance before you drive yours in Spain. Many policies will cover you, but it’s crucial to check with your insurance company that you’re covered for accidents, theft and damage in a foreign country.
Tolls: Some highways in Spain are toll roads (autopistas), especially those along the coast of the Med and near major cities. Carry some cash or a credit card to pay tolls.
Speed Limits: On motorways and highways the general speed limit is 120 km/h (approx. 74 mph) unless otherwise posted. Speed limits on main roads range between 90 – 100 km/h (approx. 56 – 62 mph). In towns and cities the speed limit is usually 50 km/h (approx. 31 mph), though there may be signs indicating reduced limits.
- Motorhomes: Depending on the size of your motorhome, the speed limits may be reduced. For vehicles over 3,500kg, the speed limit on highways can drop to 90 km/h (approx. 56 mph).
Alcohol: Spain has strict rules around drinking and driving. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 mg/ml for general drivers. It’s always safest to avoid alcohol entirely.
Parking / overnight: In Spain there are various rules and regulations around parking and overnight stays in motorhomes.
- Motorhome Parking: Spain has a growing number of designated motorhome parking areas, known as áreas de autocaravanas. These are safe, legal spots where you can park your motorhome overnight.
- Wild Camping: Wild camping (parking your motorhome in non-designated areas) is generally not allowed in Spain. However, you can often park in public spaces for a few hours during the day.
- Overnight Stays: To avoid fines, always stay in authorised motorhome areas or campsites when overnighting in your motorhome.
Best Ways to Get to Spain
Getting to Spain by motorhome can be an adventure, and a rewarding experience in itself. There are several options depending on where you’re coming from.
Ferry: If you’re traveling from the UK or other European countries, taking a ferry to Spain is one of the best options. Ferry rides can take 24 hours or more, so make sure you book a cabin for a comfortable journey.
Popular ferry routes from the UK to Spain include:
- Portsmouth to Bilbao (operated by Brittany Ferries)
- Plymouth to Santander (operated by Brittany Ferries)
- Barcelona to Genoa or Civitavecchia (operated by Grimaldi Lines)
Driving: For those already in Europe, driving to Spain offers a scenic and adventurous option. From the south of France it’s just a short drive to northern Spain, making it an ideal route for motorhome travel.

Travelling on a Budget
Spain can be a budget-friendly destination for motorhome travellers, though to make the financial most of it you must plan carefully.
- Avoid Expensive Campsites: Instead of staying in campsites that feel relatively high cost, look for motorhome areas that are free or offer low-cost services like waste disposal and water.
- Local shopping: Stock up on your groceries at local markets and supermarkets, where you can find fresh produce – and affordable Spanish wines!
- Fuel: Prices in Spain can vary, so always check for the best at local fuel stations, and consider filling up in smaller towns to avoid higher prices in touristy areas.
Taking Your Dog to Spain
Spain is pet-friendly, but there are certain rules you need to follow.
- Pet Passport etc: If you’re travelling with a pet from the UK, you’ll need to ensure they have a pet passport that includes up-to-date vaccinations (especially rabies). You’ll also need to make sure that your pet is microchipped for identification.
- Campsites: Spain has numerous campsites that are pet-friendly, but always check in advance to make sure your motorhome site allows animals. Many motorhome areas also permit pets, but always ensure you stick to leash laws – and clean up!
Motorhoming in Spain can be a truly unforgettable experience. One that allows you to explore this beautiful country of diverse landscapes and rich culture, all at your own pace. With careful planning, awareness of and adherence to legal requirements and a flexible itinerary, you’re all set to make the most of your Spanish adventure.
