They say the journey is as important as the destination, if not more so. If that’s actually true (clue: in motorhoming it is) then there are things you’re going to need to make sure your travels are as comfortable and convenient as possible. Things that will contribute to the lifestyle, things that will make your trips that bit easier. In other words: Accessories. With the right accessories your whole motorhome experience will be enhanced, and your travels will be smoother and safer.

In this edition of the Don Amott blog, we’ll highlight some of the top motorhome accessories – the ones you simply can’t travel without, whether you have a brand new motorhome or a used model.

Levellers

One of the most important accessories for any motorhome owner is a set of levellers. Although many campsites are relatively flat, it’s not an exact science and parking spots / pitches might not be absolutely landscaped to make sure. So, it’s not uncommon to find yourself parked on a slight or very slight incline. It’s essential to have a level motorhome – at the very least to stop you spilling your tea, or your toast sliding off the plate! In all seriousness, it’s not only more comfortable but it’s also crucial for the proper functioning of appliances and systems – e.g. fridge and heating.

Levellers (sometimes also known as levelling blocks) come in a variety of forms, from simple wedges that you place under the wheels to hydraulic levelling systems that offer a more advanced functionality. For most motorhome owners, a set of wheel levellers or ramps will be more than adequate to ensure your vehicle parks up level.

Sat Nav

Tackling roads in a motorhome can be a bit trickier than in a ‘normal’ car. With a larger vehicle, route choices are sometimes more limited due to narrow lanes, low bridges, and weight restrictions, all of which need to be factored in to your journeys. A motorhome sat nav is the answer as it can be tailored to your motorhome’s size, weight and height, and routes can be planned to avoid problems. Many motorhome sat navs also include information about motorhome-friendly campsites and points of interest along the way.

Windscreen Covers

For those early morning starts or late-night park-ups, using a windscreen cover is a must. They serve a dual purpose, not only keeping your motorhome’s interior warm during chilly mornings but providing added privacy and security by blocking out the view of your motorhome’s interior. Windscreen covers are available in various materials, with some designed to be easily removed and stored, while others stay in place permanently. Make sure you choose one to fit your motorhome’s specific dimensions.

Solar Panels

This is the age of awareness – and the need for sustainable travel cannot be ignored. Solar panels are becoming increasingly popular among motorhome owners, so much so that many manufacturers now install them as a matter of course. However, not every motorhome has them fitted, and so portable solar panels are very useful. They can provide a renewable source of energy, powering your devices, lights and even small appliances without having to rely on campsite hook-up or motorhome battery.

For those who like to go off-grid during their motorhome travels, solar panels are especially important. They can keep the vehicle’s leisure battery topped up, ensuring that you have power for essentials (lighting, water pumps, heating etc).

Outdoor Furniture

Indoors, your motorhome will provide you with pretty much all the on-the-road comfort you need – but spending time outside is one of the major pleasures of road tripping. Having good outdoor furniture can transform your time and make it even more pleasurable. Folding chairs, tables and awning mats can really transform your outdoor space into a cosy retreat. You should always opt for lightweight, compact items that are easy to store. A portable BBQ can also complement your set-up, allowing you to eat al fresco in comfort.

Security

Safety and security are always big concerns when travelling in a motorhome – especially when you’re parking overnight in unfamiliar locations. To protect your motorhome and the belongings you’ve got in it, a good security system is crucial. There are various devices available, from simple steering wheel locks to advanced alarm systems and GPS trackers.

A motorhome that you’ve kitted out with quality accessories can be key to a successful and enjoyable trip. From levellers and sat navs to solar panels and security gear, motorhome accessories are indispensable. Our Don Amott Accessory Megastore, at our HQ on Eggington Road in Hilton, offers a fantastic choice of motorhome accessories to make sure that every trip is a good trip.
